Pushin’On | Fri 30th July | Blu Jaz Café | Keep On Mixing
Its riddle time! One night. One place. One orchestra. 5 DJs and 2 floors of funk, soul, hip-hop and boogie. Hands up if you know the answer……
The Lion City Orchestra
This is the house band of Pushin’On and our answer to the JBs, the Dap-Kings. The LCO returns to the stage after time-off recording their first single. Get ready for some deep soul and uplifting R&B, the kind that melts chocolate. PLUS the debut of a breathless non-stop mix set of ‘live’ funk.
Deejay XG
He is hip-hop MC and selecta, Xarin Garuda. Heavily influenced by electro boogie and drum heavy hip-hop classics, a Deejay XG set is like opening Pandora’s box in a record store. Best heard with a pen and notepad in hand.
DJ Niko
He is the most recent addition to the regular DJ line-up at Pushin’On. Having cut his teeth in DJ battles since 2005, DJ Niko brings his blend of turntablism, hip-hop and nu-funk to the dancefloor.
Funk Bastard
Put this brother on anytime and he will blow your mind! DJ for ‘live’ act Cosa Nostra, producer and serious crate digger; catch his late set tonight and discover tunes you never thought could make you dance.

DJ KoFlow
Fresh off the debut of a blazing ‘live’ set at Hennessey Artistry, DJ KoFlow brings his solo magic to Pushin’On. Don’t miss the dangerous combination of hot beats and mad skills as he tears it up on the turntables.
Masterpiece
You’ve seen him as MC for Pushin’On, frontman for the Lion City Orchestra and newest resident DJ of Pushin’On. Tonight, he debuts a solo ‘live’ set using Ableton, Launchpad, hand percussion, melodica, vocals and ‘live’ looping. All cooked into a fresh 60 min set of electric funk.

Pushin’On | Fri 28th May | Blu Jaz Café | Smiling Faces
The Pushin’On monthly rolls around again with more of the same dedication to new faces and new music. Check out the line-up:
The Lion City Orchestra
At last month’s Pushin’On, the Lion City Orchestra put in another amazing shift at the 3rd floor of Blu Jaz Café. The room was packed, people were dancing throughout their 1-hour set and the LCO signed off with a 3-song encore.
On this night, the LCO put on their signature 90 min appearance, including a set of heart-wrenching deep soul and uplifting R&B. The highlight tonight is the debut performance of their new single, Bad Habits, a blue-eyed soul tune about one man’s struggle with his bad habits.
DJ Niko
Last month saw the return of DJ Niko after a 5-year absence. His comeback trail continues at Pushin’On with a 1-hr set of hip-hop and disco-funk, mashed-up turntablist style.
Funk Bast*rd
Fresh off a mini-tour of Europe, Funk Bast*rd is back at Pushin’On. Who knows what gems he’s found in the record shops over there, but we’ll be the lucky ones to hear some of them first.
PLUS Pushin’On residents (DJ Shellsuit, DJ Chunk & Masterpiece)
Chunk’s laying down some rare funk covers this month. Think Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Sly Stone and the Meters can’t get funkier? Watch out…
Shellsuit’s got funk weapons and he’s not afraid to use them. Everything from funk, soul, latin, hip hop, and surf rock in the mix.
And as part of the ongoing shoot for the Pushin’On documentary, our film crew will be on the move. So if you’ve got a shout out to give, stop that man and smile.

Pushin’On | Fri 30th April | Blu Jaz Café | They’ll All Be There
April’s Pushin’On will see all the acts on the Pushin’On roster appear on the same night for the first time since the beginning of the year. Read on for a taste of what’s gonna happen come 30th April;
THE MIGHTY MIGHTY
The latest act to come out of the Pushin’On nights is the Mighty Mighty, a 5-piece rare groove band in the tradition of the Meters, the Bamboos and the Lefties Soul Connection. Drums, bass, guitar, percussion and organs come together in a blistering non-stop set of instrumental funk and rare groove.
On this night, they will feature 2 MCs for some ‘live’ hip-hop. Another highlight is the debut performance of the Mighty Mighty’s first single, Have You Seen Jay?. Written by Masterpiece, Have You Seen Jay? is a disco-funk tale of 2 friends looking for the ungrateful Jay, who disappeared with their precious stash.
THE LION CITY ORCHESTRA
Singapore’s premier soul band and the house band of Pushin’On also takes the stage with their full line-up, last seen rocking Blu Jaz in Feb. The 8-piece Lion City Orchestra returns with more of the furious funk and sweet soul that has been winning fans over since 2008.
On this night, catch their debut performance of their latest single, Still Waiting (For Your Love). Still Waiting (For Your Love) says it like in the title, but with the irresistible groove of a Motown party in summer.
MERLIONS OF HIP-HOP
Cajoled, bribed and threatened out of hiding is the notoriously apolitical Merlions of Hip-Hop. You may remember them from Tuckshop days as the duo that knows the 90’s hip-hop/soul sound like they grew up in it. Tonight, DJ Horrible and Nazmatazz bring out the dusty records to give you some good hip-hop, R&B and neo-soul.
DJ SHELLSUIT AND MASTERPIECE ON THE DECKS
DJ Shellsuit follows on from the Merlions of Hip-Hop with a mixed bag of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Latin, Boogie, Disco and funky oddities found in his continuing search for the funkiest tunes for the dancefloor.
And catch Pushin’On’s vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, MC Masterpiece turn DJ to share the private corner in the universe of music that has inspired his work with Pushin’On, the Lion City Orchestra & the Mighty Mighty.

Pushin’On | Fri 26th Mar | Blu Jaz Café | Mighty Mighty Big Guns
This month’s Pushin’On goes heavy on the rhythm and the groove. Fresh off their appearance at Inside Out last Sat, the hardworking Mighty Mighty returns with more instrumental goodness. On this night, they dabble in blues and jazz with the help of Jeffrey (Lion City Orchestra) on saxophone. Later on, DJ Shellsuit mans the decks for a disco/boogie party in the attic.
We’ve somehow managed to coax some big guns to come out tonight. DJ KoFlow, Ash and Funk Bastard bring you 5 hours of tasty funk, soul, disco, hip-hop boogie and jazz. This is the first time since 2009 that these three have been on the same bill at Pushin’On so bring out your cameras and recorders. Memories from tonight will get you by for the rest of the year.
The Pushin’On cam will also be out for our ongoing shoot for the Pushin’On documentary. Please tell us if you don’t want your mum to see it.

Happy 2010 from the Pushin’On crew!
Hello everyone,
DJ Shellsuit, DJ Chunk and MC Masterpiece from the Pushin’On crew would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a great 2010. We’d also like to give our biggest thanks for supporting our nights and gigs. Your support in every imaginable way has helped us to keep going. Whether you turned up, wished you were there, danced, enjoyed the music, bought drinks or contributed to the door; the support is important for an independent night pushing non-commercial music.
We know these are troubling times for the music industry – we’ve read our fair share about it. But we’ve kept faith in what we’re doing and pushing the funk, soul, boogie, disco, jazz and hip-hop music we know, simply because there is not enough of it in Singapore. There are many other independent promoters and music heads doing their thing and we think it’s only right to acknowledge the spirit of the following peeps who are pushing their own music against the sensible advice of their Moms, Dads and the radio;
+65
16 Bars
Bake n Shake
Black Magic
Cosa Nostra
Coup
Donuts
Doomph!
Dubwise
Dustpan
Get Tashed
Good Times
Hands
Jammin’
Locus
Meshradio
Mugic
Qilin
Rightclicka

Trybe
Upp/Circular
There may be others that we’ve forgotten to mention and we apologise if we missed you. We know you do it for the love and not the money (a modest cut of the bar takings can’t feed everyone). We know what it’s like to hold down a day-job and trying to get that mixtape or track done in the evening. It can be very tough. Here’s wishing independent promoters all the best for the future and hope your nights continue to grow.
Pushin’On celebrates its 4th Anniversary on Fri 29th Jan (3 years at Blu Jaz Café!) and boy has it been a ride. From 2 DJs and 1 MC in Hideout bar, the Pushin’On family has grown. We now perform as a “live” act. We have given you The Lion City Orchestra, an 8-piece funk & soul band. We also recently unveiled The Mighty Mighty, a 4-piece rare groove band. More than 30 different DJs have graced the decks. And thousands of punters have left their footprints on the dancefloor.
We’ve strived to keep the entry free to create a house-party vibe. When there are guest bands or DJs, we put a “Give As You Please” door charge. Guests contribute to an entry fee at the door, with no fixed amount. This allows you to decide how much you support the night and the entertainment. This is also because we believe that quality acts should be rewarded.
Most independent promoters, including us, do not get paid a fixed fee by the venue. Most of the time, it is just a cut of the bar takings. Ask any promoter and don’t be surprised to hear that this is rarely enough for a night to grow and involve more people.
Pushin’On is definitely looking to grow further in 2010. With that in mind, the “Give As You Please” door charge will be a permanent fixture for the Pushin’On monthly at Blu Jaz Cafe from this month onwards. We will continue to give you quality DJs, bands and “live” acts and hope you continue to support us from your heart and enjoy the nights.
Love and happiness,
Pushin’On Crew

Pushin’On | Fri, 27th Nov | Blu Jaz Café | Funk Philosophy
This month is your final chance of 2009 to catch the Pushin’On crew at Blu Jaz Café. So before you run off to your well-deserved year-end vacations, come on down to Pushin’On and party with music from 2 guests with the right funk philosophy;
DJ Matty Wainwright:
Performing under the Philosophie moniker in Singapore, Matty is bound to the Hundred Schools of Thought of the DJ world. Stirring up the melting pot of old and new, playing anything from Deep House, Funk, Nu-Jazz, Slo-Mo Cosmic, Broken Beats, Boogie, Soul, Dubby Disco, Reggae and Balearic Gems. The mantra is simple; if its got soul, its got the vote!
JDubs:
You may have caught JDubs at his Pushin’On debut last month, where he mercilessly kept punters dancing throughout his 2 hour set of hip-hop and funk. Hailing from Newcastle, Australia, the man scored his first gig only a month after touching a turntable. 10 years later and he is still dropping fine selections of funky numbers mixed for the dancefloor. He has played warm-up sets for Krafty Kuts, Friendly, Kid Kenobi & MC Sureshock, Soul of Man and Drumattic Twins. JDubs will get you.
DJ Chunk & MC Masterpiece:
The Pushin’On residents are evolving into a “live” act in preparation for 2010. You can catch the transformation at Blu Jaz Café with DJ Chunk on the decks and MC Masterpiece on synth, vocals and anything else that makes a cool sound. Still funky and soulful but with more boogie on the bounce.
Zoukout and Pushin’On 4th Anniversary:
The bus-stop billboards have beaten us to it!!! Pushin’On will be rocking Zoukout on Sat 12th Dec. We’ve been asked to play a chill-out set but it would be a waste to just chill-out for our Zoukout debut. The original trio of DJ Shellsuit, DJ Chunk and MC Masterpiece bring a new ‘live’ set thick on the boogie and disco.
Jan 2010 marks our 4th anniversary as Pushin’On. Since 2006, there has always been a Pushin’On night to go for every month. DJs, dancers, musicians and bands have been an important part of the nights. More important are the punters, and we mean YOU, who made your presence felt at the bar, the balcony or on the dancefloor. The anniversary show on Jan 29th will be a musical treat. So mark your calendars.

Bake N Shake | Fri 13 Nov | Night & Day | feat. Dave Code
Bake N Shake is an offshoot from the Pushin’On funk nights where DJ’s Chunk and Shellsuit get together with Funk Bast*rd to make tracks into the world of funky electronic music. Loof is the new venue, with a beefed up soundsystem to get the rooftop party rocking. Our guest this month is Dave Code – a true party DJ with a spooky ability to know just what to drop to get you moving.
Dave Code first attracted attention, competing in DMC competitions during the early 90s in Adelaide, Australia, before going onto to become a key player in the developing local Hip Hop scene.
Promoter of the long running night Repertoire, he was one of the first people to fly local Hip Hop groups and DJs from across the country to perform.
A skilled DJ in his own right, Code has played in many countries and supported some of the biggest names in Hip Hop, including RUN DMC, Rock Steady Crew, Mix Master Mike, Lord Finesse and Roc Raida.
Now residing in London, Code is resident at the monthly Pushin’ On night alongside DJ Regal, as well as guesting at many other events, including as support DJ for the award winning Australian Hip Hop group, Hilltop Hoods on their UK tour.
Code’s putting together a Disco and Boogie set, with a sprinkling of Old School Rap and Electro Funk thrown in. Don’t miss it – it’s going to be funky!

THE LEGENDARY JAZZY JAY at Stereolab
Universal Zulu Nation / Soul Sonic Force / Strong City Records
We are honoured and excited to welcome JAZZY JAY to Singapore – Hip Hop Pioneer, Afrika Bambaataa’s right-hand man, and one of the funkiest DJs on the Planet.
Jazzy Jay’s illustrious career began in the streets of the Bronx in the early 70’s as a Zulu King B-Boy and Dj under the guidance of Afrika Bambaataa. His skills earned him a place as a Universal Zulu Nation DJ and during the 80’s club revolution he went from performing at street parties to New York’s hottest clubs at the time – the Negril, Roxy, Ritz, and Danceteria. Around the same time, he starred as The Roxy’s DJ in the Hip Hop classic film Beat Street, also contributing to the movie’s soundtrack. He was also one of the first DJs to bring Hip Hop music to the airwaves and his KISS FM show grew so popular that it was syndicated on Radio One in the UK.
He was propelled to stardom when he co-produced the groundbreaking hit “Planet Rock” with Afrika Bambaataa and The Soul Sonic Force, and went on to co-found Def Jam records with Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, working with artists such as LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy.
Next came Jazzy Jay’s Studio – where acts including Fat Joe, Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest kick-started their careers. And together with Rocky Bucano he founded Strong City records, producing a multitude of hits with old school Hip Hop legends Ice Cream Tee, Masters of Ceremony, Busy Bee and Don Baron.
Jazzy was inducted into the Technics/DMC DJ Hall of Fame in 2000 and is featured in the DJ documentary Scratch, interviewed in the basement of his home where he keeps his extensive music collection, rumoured to be 300,000 to 400,000 records.
Still heavily involved in the development of the art form, Jazzy is busy rocking parties all over the World, hosting events and speaking on panels about Hip Hop history, industry, and politics.

Bake N Shake | Fri 14 Aug | Night and Day | Qilin Music Special
This month’s Bake N Shake features a showcase from Qilin, a new record label straight out of SG with artists all over the globe and a musical direction that’s off the planet.
Here’s what they have to say:
“We are a label that drums to the marches of democratic beats. Founded by a crew of firm believers of sensory development and propelled by a clan of critical thinkers in sonic progress, Qilin is set to unleash its onward stride for music egalitarianism…All boundaries, geographical, linguistic and musical, will be eradicated. We brew a creative concoction that mixes fluttering ideas & accidental inspirations with crafted mishaps and tenacious tinkers.”

Stop Press!
Unfortunately the next London Pushin’ On has been cancelled at the request of The Raven!
They are going through a change of management at the moment and have asked us to wait until this has been completed before committing to further shows.
Needless to say we are extremely disappointed to have to cancel two days before the gig… but rest assured, we will be back bigger and better in the next month or so… at The Raven or another venue.
Until then, stay safe and look out for some Pushin’ On London mixes on the audio page over the next few weeks.
1love,
The Pushin’ On Crew.

Continuing on from last month, we again bring another East London Party rocker to The Raven. This time in the shape of Mr Khy Boogie!

Pushin' On London mixes in the Audio section!
2 new mixes from the London Pushin’ On family:
A quick sampler from Dave Code on some of what you can expect to hear at The Raven every month….
and a rocking live mix from DJ Regal circa 2004, supporting Africa Bambaataa in Sydney, Australia. Starting off with classic breaks, and moving seamlessly into classic hip hop, this is definitely one for the party people!
Watch out for some new mixes going up over the next few weeks.
1 love,
Pushin’ On Cru London.

Pushin' On London | Friday the 6th of March | feat. DJ Shepdog
East meets West this Friday at Pushin’ On, as we bring East London Party Rocker DJ Shepdog down to the West Side to get you movin’.
The man behind both the NICE UP! parties and record label, Shepdog has built a solid reputation over the last 5 years for rocking some of the funkiest shows in London. Whilst everyone and his dog are chasing their tales of the most current or ‘happening’ musical movement, the NICE UP! music ethic is simple – “righteous party vibes”.
As always Pushin’ On residents DJ Regal and Dave Code, will be digging deep in their crates to drop some of the tastiest tunes you’ll hear. From Boogie to Hip Hop, and Soul to Jazz, the boys bring the funk to the Raven every time.
If you haven’t made it to a Pushin’ On in London yet, make sure you get down this Friday, as it it looks set to be another cracker!

Pushin’On Tour | 12th – 16th June
Thu 12th June, 1100
We arrive at Reus airport in Barcelona. An hour later, we’re in the city centre. Even though I was dead tired, the richness of the city is still very amazing. And the extensiveness of the Metro system (a Singaporean boy is always impressed by good public transport).

Pushin´On Tour | Thur 12th June
2000
Our first look at Sala Apolo – a grand old theatre with two-floors, a huge dancefloor, gallery seating, and red wood all around. The Bell Rays had just sound checked. A very friendly bunch of rockers.
Sala Apolo recently upgraded their sound system, and it showed. Powerful enough for a stadium or outdoor festival, but still crisp and warm. Nerves start creeping in at this point.

Pushin´On Tour | Thur 12th June
2300 – 0030
The Bell Rays take to the stage for a five-hundred-strong crowd. Very energetic rhythm section and smooth switching from garage rock to sweet soul.

Pushin´On Tour | Fri 13th June
0030 – 0230
The Bell Rays leave the stage after two encores and resident Dj Mighty Cesar comes on to start the party. We’re slightly concerned when the crowd thins out to about fifty people, but we just get on with the show. Twenty minutes later, the crowd replenishes and the dancefloor is full until the end of our set. Very satisfying.

Pushin´On Tour | Fri 13th June
0230 – 0500
Monk One(Wax Poetics) rocks a solid two hour set, local breakers get on the floor, and the Pushin’On Crew get slightly tipsy. The local Djs, the Boogie Junkies, end off the night. Overall, an amazing start to the tour.

Pushin´On Tour | Fri 13th June
0700
Then what? We pack up, return to the hotel, and start looking for a taxi to the airport for our 8am flight to Madrid. On the street, empty taxis refuse to stop. The clock keeps ticking and the lack of sleep doesn’t help. After more than half an hour, a taxi finally stops for us. The taxis are on strike and because of that, are not running on meter. A twenty euro ride costs forty, but we’re too tired and too late for the flight to care.We make the flight with minutes to spare.
Barajas airport in Madrid is a confusing, colossal maze. Dazed and sleep deprived, we finally get out an hour after landing. Then a tall, American man stops us and says “Pushin’On?’. From the airport to the taxi after the club closed, Marcos, the local promoter, was a great host.

Pushin´On Tour | Diggin´ Madrid
1900
After a much-needed snooze in the hotel, there’s time to wander around. We head to a record fair a short distance away. However, it had been running for a week and the local Djs had got their hands on most of the good stuff. Still, DJ Dave Code and Shellsuit managed to dig out a few gems.

Pushin´On Tour | Fri 13th June
2130
El Junco is another dream venue to play at – a smoky, basement jazz club with a simple exterior and inner wall adorned with images of jazz greats. Dave Code could not stop gushing about it.
After a solid dinner of patatas bravas and fried seafood platter, Marcos brings us back to the club and it is jam-packed. We come on after the house band and same story, crowd clears out noticeably. We had four hours to change that and DJ Shellsuit kicked it off. Funk, Soul, Boogie or underground Hip Hop. The El Junco crowd knew their stuff. The club filled up again and the hours passed easily.

Pushin´On Tour | Sat 14th June
0600
We play the last track with the bar staff cleaning up, people still dancing, and our taxi to the airport waiting outside. The El Junco gig was even better than Sala Apolo; a very responsive crowd and an excellent promoter. And I love with what little I saw of Madrid. A return trip is a must.

Back in BCN and facing problems with accommodation. Fortunately Alex, our mate who helped make this trip possible, helps find an apartment for short-term lease. Finally settle in late in the afternoon and the exhausted Pushin’On crew take a siesta.

Alex bangs on the door and wakes us up for the next show. at Arenys de Mar, a beach bar on the outskirts near Mataro. In summer, the weather really affects people going out to the beach. Tonight wasn’t a good night. It’d been raining for a week and being in a jacket and trousers at a beach party is just not the right vibe. But the bar owner was happy, and that’s what matters. Looking forward to a couple days rest till the next show on Wed at the Local Bar. Stay tuned folks.

Pushin’On Tour | Wed 18th June
Local Bar was the last show for the Spain leg after a few days of rest. It’s a small place with not much of a dancefloor, but we were determined to rock it the best we could.
Soundcheck was not ideal. The console was a fixed set-up tailored for CDJs and with not much space to play around with. The mixer was elevated above the decks, the laptop on a stack of wine boxes.
True Jazzchild, a DJ from Manchester, now based in Barcelona, kicked off the night with a set of dancefloor jazz and funk. Local Bar started filling up with the summer and Sonar crowd. We jumped on just past midnight and got straight into it. 90 min to get a dancefloor going and half an hour in, we got it! Ladies grooving and dudes throwing down some Soul Train moves. The night ended with a set of funky 7’s from resident, Roger C. Superb way to end the series of Spain shows.
Pushin’On Tour | Fri 20th June
The ever-resourceful Alex brought us around to some free parties happening around Sonar. First up was a boombox installation by a local collective at a boutique called Ho La La. Fellow boombox enthusiast, DJ Shellsuit, was particularly excited by this. Almost 100 boomboxes stacked on top of each other.
Then we headed to a party by VICE magazine. Free drinks, two floors of music, free drinks and loads of people drinking free drinks made it a really good party. One act was particularly interesting. A local MC/sound artist, Meneo, played a crazy electronic set using an 8 bit Gameboy, mic, and effects pedals. Mad shit.
This is it for our Spain updates. The gallery has been updated with pics from the tour. The clean ones at least. Enjoy and keep checking the site for more news from the Pushin’On Tour.

Beach parties in Barcelona are huge. And they get bigger when it’s to celebrate St Joan, the saint that protected Catalunya. Tens of thousands of revellers gathered on Barcelona’s beaches, setting off fireworks and dancing to reggae, dub, techno and house. We were enjoying our final night in Barcelona – after all, our flight to Amsterdam would only be in the early afternoon.
0300
Ready to sleep and one final check of the itinerary. And then rude surprise. Our flight’s at 0640am. No sleep again and straight to El Prat airport.
0600
Waiting to board in a very well lit terminal. And then this guy sits down next to Shellsuit.
I look at him. He has the assured aura of a star. I look at his clothes. Black sports jacket, white Russel tee, Lonsdale track pants and black Converse Chuck Taylors. He starts looking more familiar. I look to my left and see his entourage. One of them is wearing a “Marky Ramone – The Ramones” t-shirt. It is him! Camera is in DJ Shellsuit’s bag. But it’s already checked in.
Always have your own camera on your travels.
0900
Out of Schippol Airport and still not over the missed opportunity. But we gotta push on know?
Amsterdam has been hard to get gigs. So we skip it (to return later) and head to Utrecht where our host stays. Utrecht is a student town with many cute Dutch girls cycling everywhere, and less tourists than Amsterdam. So much more about Utrecht we want to tell you but there is just not enough space. ;)
Pushin’On Tour | 25th June | Utrecht, Holland
We head out to the streets to do promo and find out about the scene in Utrecht and Holland. Jazz has a strong following in Utrecht, and this weekend a jazz/funk/soul festival is happening. It’s also the final weekend before smoking indoors is banned. It’s a potentially busy weekend, and would be great to get a gig. However, most of the places we approached had their programming set. Things were not looking good.
But later that evening, I get a call on my mobile. It’s the manager of a bar called Café Hart who we passed our demo to earlier in the day. We can play this Saturday. A four hour set.

Pushin’On Tour | 27th June | Amsterdam
We could not leave Holland without dropping by Amsterdam. Amsterdam Central is busy with people and bursting with life. It’s full of tourists, but the narrow, old buildings and graffiti made it a pleasure. And also digging at Record Friend;
See that guy in the Portugal jersey? He’s just the owner’s mate. The guy with the mad hair and moustache is the owner and a real character. He opened the store an hour beyond closing time so Shellsuit could listen to his finds while we listened to Portuguese folk music. If you’re ever in Amsterdam, you must check out his store.

Pushin’On Tour | 28th June | Café Hart
2130 – 0300
Café Hart is a nice mid-sized venue, mainly for people to chill out and chat. They just had to remove one table to get a dancefloor space. Unfortunately, that was beyond our control. But give DJ Shellsuit four hours to work a crowd and people were dancing in whatever space they could find. That’s always the mission.
We successfully got a gig in Holland, so now it’s on to Scotland. We take the overnight ferry to Newcastle, followed by a coach to Glasgow. Then it’s back on the hunt for gigs.

Shellsuit’s quick dig in Manhattan
There’s a ton of record shops in Manhattan. Here’s the best I stumbled across:
A1 Records
439 E 6TH St
Crates and crates of amazing hip hop, mainly boom bap era, old school, and underground classics. A good selection of latin, jazz, soul and funk too. The doorway is covered in polariod pictures of famous new york producers in the shop.
For live music check Arthur’s Tavern on 57 Grove St. It’s a small bar with a live band playing extended versions of soul and funk classics. Entry is free, but don’t forget to contribute to the band’s tip jar.
Pushin’On Tour
Pushin’On tours Europe and the UK this summer! DJ Shellsuit and MC Masterpiece join DJ Dave Code in Germany (Frankfurt) followed by Spain (Barcelona & Madrid). Dates will be posted on the website as they are firmed, and MC Masterpiece (his first trip outside of Asia) will post stories, sights and sounds on the website every Tuesday and Thursday.

Pushin’On | Fri 30th May | Busy Weekend
Pushin’On this month has all the guests taking over the show. DJ Ko-flow returns from a month long sojourn in Melbourne which included opening for Roc Raida on the “Late Night Hype” at Miss Libertine. DJ Rough has a new set of tunes to debut at Pushin’On, and all he will say about it is “Baltimore bass”. Mister Magic was recently granted an employment pass by the government, and that means more rare groove selections for us. Finally, MC Garuda hosts the party, bringing along some talented MCs for a rhyme fest closer to midnight.
It’s a line-up of familiar guests. But the vibe’s all the same.

Pushin’On | Fri 30th May and Sat 31st May | Balangan Beach(Bali) and F Lounge (Seminyak, Bali)
DJ Shellsuit, DJ Chunk and MC Masterpiece had no choice but to hand over the real Pushin’On to trusted guests as they’ll be away in Bali. On Fri 30th May, the Pushin’On crew performs at Balangan Beach at a celebration for guests from the surfing community. It will be on a clifftop, and there is also supposedly a “safety cordon”. This one could be really fun so check back on the site for shaky pictures.
And on Sat 31st May, the Pushin’On crew hits “FiveStarBoogie”, the Sat night party at F Lounge (http://www.myspace.com/f_lounge ). We’ve never played at a trendy cocktail bar with all-white speakers. And they usually have house music on their roster. This one could need some PR skills.
So if you or anyone you know are in Bali looking for a night out that weekend, come on by or help to spread the word.

After 2 years and countless happy days, we feel it’s the right time to give back. Pushin’On dedicates this month’s party to our fuzzy friends from ACRES www.acres.org.sg, a non-profit organisation dedicated to animal welfare and wildlife rescue.
We encourage you to join us in helping ACRES continue their good work. Pushin’On introduces a one-off “Give As You Please” policy at the door. Any amount, big or small, is welcome. The proceeds will greatly help ACRES in the construction of Singapore’s very first animal rescue centre and other ongoing programmes. So they too can keep pushin’ on.

Singapore’s longest running funk night returns with three guest DJs. Together with residents Dj Chunk and MC Masterpiece, Dj Rough brings funk and hip-hop classics that have kept dancefloors sweaty all over the world. If James Brown, Grandmaster Flash and the Incredible Bongo Band get you moving, Pushin’On needs your body heat.
Dubwise kicked off 2008 getting busy with numerous gigs including Sessions@Phuture and performing on the same bill as GCorp@Hacienda. Almost a year to the day described as “one of our best parties of 2007”, Dubwise returns to Pushin’On with phat basslines layered with much grooving. Dub, Dancehall and Reggae served Ruffa Class.

Pushin’On turns 2 this month and we feel like having a birthday and New Year party all-in-one, Singapore style. DJ Shellsuit will roll out the sweet soul and deep disco for the dancefloor, DJ Chunk will drop heavy funk and real hip-hop and MC Masterpiece (vocals/horn) gives you tender dancing energy for the night.
And what is an anniversary without a guest. Tonight we welcome DJ Skratchmark (www.steakproductions.com) who has been paying his dues in the San Diego/California/Bay Area scene since the 90’s. From Manila, he now runs Steak Productions not just to promote, but also educate on urban culture. This is his virgin gig in Singapore so bring a date and stay out.

Thank you!
To all the funky people
The Pushin’On crew would like to thank all who turned up at Phuture last Sat (22nd Dec) for Sessions. We are very heartened by the turnout on such short notice and and also for tolerating the minor problems with the guestlist. What’s important is that we were all there for one of the first times(we are hoping for more!) that the Pushin’On sound was heard on a big system in a big club. Keep Pushin’On!
Have a wonderful new year with good company and good music and don’t forget Pushin’On at Blu Jaz Cafe, this Friday 28th Dec. This the last Pushin’On at Blu Jaz for 2007 and we have a treat for you as we present Soul 56, a 9 piece Latin Soul band recently discovered by the Pushin’On funk radar. It will be a blast we promise.
Much love
MC Masterpiece
Pushin'On proudly presents the debut headline show of Soul 56
After months doing gigs in the community and grassroots circuit, Pushin’On discovered them playing to an audience of schoolmates with a style and sound reminiscent of Latin soul greats such as Fania, Ray Baretto, Celia Cruz and Sergio Mendes. The Soul 56 sound is a salad of vintage mambo, salsa, boogaloo and funk, made more amazing by young musicians barely out of their teens. From the musical hotbed of the east, we bring Soul 56 onto the Blu Jaz stage for the final Pushin’On of 2007. Come experience 90 minutes of pure Latin soul heat!

Pushin'On @ Blu Jaz | Fri 15th Jun | New Kid On the Block
This time of the year, things tend to get a bit more exciting. New venues open up and music events on big stages start filling up the summer holiday calendar. Pushin’On too, have some changes to announce on a smaller scale.
We begin introducing more Djs/ selectas to enhance the Pushin’On sound and this Friday, 15th June at Blu Jaz Cafe marks the first appearance of Menta. He shuns the title of DJ but we still believe he has a good ear. Menta gets on for the early hours followed by DJ Shellsuit, Stop. and MC Masterpiece.
And on 22nd June, we’re at the TUCKSHOP (NO.21, TANJONG PAGAR RD #01-05), the spanking new alley-style bar fronted by 2 cool blokes (Dean and Kaye) with much soul in their system. We are excited to play in a more intimate venue. So join us as we bring the Pushin’On ruckus to where the space is tight but just right.
The next date at Blu Jaz Cafe is on Fri, 29th June where we’ll give away another mix cd, “Vol 3: It’s a Job, Not an Excuse”. We’re not done yet.

Well don’t we all love surprise parties! Its our delight to announce that DJ Shellsuit and MC Masterpiece will be playing tonight at the Art Bar @ The Butter Factory(48 Robertson Quay). For the uninformed, the Art Bar is the classy, whitewashed chillout area of Butter Factory. Pushin’On chillout? No way! So its gonna be hyper and funky as always (sssshhh… they don’t know it yet) and we’d like to invite ya’ll down. From 11pm to closing, its funk, soul and jazz for those escaping the squeeze at the main room. We’ve got limited guest list spaces so drop us a mail quick to join in the action for free. Nice!
Pushin'On Friday 11th May at Blu Jaz Café
This month we’re going harder by looking back. Looking back to fellow funk-lover DJ Ko-flow to hold it down as a trusted guest. And also looking back to the days of the now forgotten Redifussion radio. Days when funk tunes began the day’s broadcast and soul instrumentals bid you goodnight. And this was right here in Singapore! We’ve unearthed records forgotten for almost 3 decades and made them stylus-friendly to be the soundtrack for your weekend dancing. Its free entry as usual, no dress code and drink specials to be announced at the venue.

Pushin’On Takeover Review
The first of Pushin’On quarterly special parties came together with the right ingredients. Good live funk and an appreciative audience during early hours. Plus enthusiastic legs and both Pushin’On and Dubwise DJs with killer sets all the way till 4 am.
Headphone Masterpiece got it running with a 30 min warm up set of home-made disco funk-rock. Then IG Collective took over and did they takeover. Fronted by the refreshingly dynamic Prema on vocals and backed by a tight quartet of musicians, IGC’s 45 min set showed all the hallmarks of a headlining funk band; tight, well-rehearsed, diverse musicianship and smart choice of originals and covers. Definitely a top candidate for a return appearance in the near future.
When Pushin’On invited Dubwise, the crew knew we’d enjoy their set cos we love their music anyway. But we did not expect both sounds to come together so perfectly like separated lovers reuniting in the Carribean. A simple summary would be: soul, funk, funk dancing, hands in the air, dub, dub, reggae, Kable swinging arms wildly, reggae, dancing, soul, funk, screaming, dub, reggae, Castro asking for more beer, Kable still swinging arms wildly, funk, jazz, jazz, Stop. unveils Rick James poster. It was all worth waiting for.
Huge “Terima Kasih” to IG Collective for braving the long drive and all the little inconveniences of an independently promoted event. Hugs and kisses to Dubwise for turning up sober and with energy to spare to jump around. And our warmest appreciation to all who turned up, early or late, sitting or dancing, shouting or just politely applauding. You turned up and that’s what counts in our books.
Watch out for some more Pushin’On specials in July. The next Pushin’On party happens on the 20th of April, not the 27th as per our flyers(venue issues). So remember that, remember to remind your friends about it and don’t forget to turn up and let’s tear it up again one more time.

They’re friends, fellow Djs and arguably two of the most unique DJ collectives gracing the independent party scene. Dubwise’s ska and reggae soundsystem pay homage to the rhythmic and production brilliance of Jamaica and its diaspora. Pushin’On give you only the funkiest and soulful black music found on vinyl. When you put them on the same bill, it’s gonna be huge.
Many thanks to Menta for the flyer design, you can check it out properly in the flyers section in the gallery.
Pushin’On @ Good Vibrations Festival Singapore 2007
Here’s the lowdown. A year on and along comes Pushin’On’s most important gig. And as the heaven’s had their way, things did go wrong. The noon soundcheck became a 2 hour wait for a lazy soundman, accompanied by the soundtrack of rain and Robert Miles’ “Children”. No surprise, soundcheck did not happen. A half hour wait at the main entrance for “Local Artist” passes meant reaching the Chinese Laundry stage 10 min before showtime. And what pressure when before us were 3 hugely talented acts (Zul Mystroe, Krazie Starr and Psykelecticz) who dazzled us and drew people to the front with a compact and powerful set of beat-boxing and rapping.
But showtime came and all that mattered was rocking the stage to the healthy and enthusiastic early crowd. DJ Chunk kicked it off with 20 min of a robust mix of funk and hip-hop. MC Masterpiece did it hip-hop style, doubling up on end rhymes and legendary global slogans such as “Bang for a buck like a prostitute”(Ugly Duckling).
Stop. picked it up, flipped it to heads and spun it around with a set of raw funk stamped with his signature love of full instrumentation and quirky vocal chops. Based on the theme of evolution, Stop. brought the 100 odd crowd through a journey of funk’s evolution based on his almanac.
DJ Shellsuit took it home with the most dancey selection of tunes that day. Familiar tunes like “Work it out” and “Pushin’On” were heard through huge speakers for the first time in Singapore. Another first next to playing in the afternoon sun. Props to all those who turned up and graced the brief set. And big smiles to strangers who came up to say hi. We are happy to give you Pushin’On vibrations .

TimeOut Singapore 1st edition yo!
Pushin'On at Hacienda
Shellsuit, Stop. and MC Masterpiece doing a short set at Hacienda this Friday (23rd), 10pm – 11.30. Apparently they think we play some kind of chillout music.

Good Vibrations update
Show times are out for the Good Vibrations Festival. We’re on at 5.45 at the Chinese Laundry stage. Dj’s Chunk, Stop. and Shellsuit on rotation for 45 minutes, with MC Masterpiece on the mic. 45 minutes isn’t much time to do our thing, but we’ll try and cover a lot of ground with some underground hip hop, old school soul and funk, and recent funk releases.
Pushin’On launch at Blu Jaz Café, Fri 26th Jan
A fresh beginning for Pushin’On at a charming new venue. But the familiar and good elements returned as strong as ever. Good funk, a full dance floor and surprises in small packages.
DJ Shellsuit and DJ Chunk carried the night with MC Masterpiece and guest Ko-flow in support. People never left the dance floor from midnight till closing. Suits danced with their dress-down Friday friends. B-boys let their guard down and allowed themselves some downright let loose moves. Plus a pint sized lady traded microphones with MC Masterpiece to let rip some very memorable jazz stylings over funky breaks. Big thanks to the mysterious Joanna for the uplifting cameo.
Pictures from the Pushin’On launch are up on the site for your viewing pleasure. So are the new mixes for the month of February. We’ll be doing it again next Friday, 9th Feb the only way we know it, fun and funky. Keep keep Pushin’On…
